Road rage is common. Never escalate it.

Road rage is more common than a lot of people realize. Some reports claim that it happens to up to 80% of American drivers every year, and it leads to more than two dozen murders. Guns are involved in hundreds of these cases, and nearly 50% of drivers admitted to yelling at other people while driving.

This isn’t something uncommon that just happens in extreme situations. It’s something that happens all the time.

Why is this? There are a lot of different reasons, one of which is the fact that being in the car gives you a sense of distance from the other individual. If you met that person in the grocery store, they probably wouldn’t treat you the same way. But if you’re both in your cars, then they may feel free to yell at you, gesture at you out the window or excessively honk the horn – or something even worse.

What should you do?

The biggest thing to keep in mind is that you never want to escalate this and make the situation worse. Don’t yell or gesture back at them. Don’t pull over and get out of your car to talk to them. Don’t drive aggressively or dangerously just because they are.

Instead, try to keep your cool and stay calm. Let the other driver pass and that will hopefully put an end to the entire situation.

If it doesn’t and that person causes an accident that leads to severe injuries, then you can always look into the legal options that you have to seek financial compensation. You can lower the odds that you’ll be injured in a road rage incident, but you can never fully prevent it, because you never really know what that other driver is going to do.
